- France has signed a historic agreement to grant New Caledonia the status of a new state within the French Republic. The deal includes the creation of a Caledonian nationality and will be added to the French Constitution. It also promises an economic recovery plan, focusing on reviving the territory’s nickel industry. The agreement still requires approval in New Caledonia, with a possible vote set for February.
- The Union Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports has opened nominations for the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award (TNNAA) 2024. This prestigious award recognizes exceptional achievements in land, water, and air adventure, as well as lifetime contributions to the field. Each winner receives a bronze statuette, certificate, blazer with silken tie or saree, and a cash prize of ₹15 lakh. Nominations are open online at www.awards.gov.in from June 1 to July 15. Interested individuals can check detailed guidelines and eligibility on the Ministry’s website yas.nic.in.
- Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya and Indian High Commissioner Santosh Jha jointly inaugurated 90 new houses in Elapathgama village of Anuradhapura. The houses were built under the India-assisted Sri Shobhita Nahimigama Project, funded with over 450 million Sri Lankan rupees. Prime Minister Amarasuriya thanked India for supporting underprivileged communities and honoured the legacy of Ven. Maduluwawe Sobhitha Thero. The Indian High Commissioner highlighted joint efforts for inclusive development and ongoing projects like railway upgrades and the Sacred City Complex. This project marks a major step in strengthening development cooperation between India and Sri Lanka.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the passing of veteran Telugu actor Kota Srinivasa Rao, who died at the age of 83 in Hyderabad. He praised Rao’s exceptional acting talent and his contributions to social service and public life. A Padma Shri awardee and former BJP MLA, Rao starred in over 750 films, and his death marks the end of a legendary chapter in Telugu cinema.
- President Droupadi Murmu has nominated Ujjwal Nikam, C. Sadanandan Master, Harsh Vardhan Shringla, and Dr. Meenakshi Jain to the Rajya Sabha. Ujjwal Nikam, a renowned lawyer from Maharashtra, served as government counsel in the Mumbai terror attack case. C. Sadanandan, a dedicated educator from Kerala, overcame political violence and continues to inspire despite losing both legs. Harsh Vardhan Shringla, a former Foreign Secretary who also served as India’s G20 Chief Coordinator and Ambassador to several countries. Dr. Meenakshi Jain, a historian and academic has contributed significantly to education and research at Delhi University.
- Minister of State for External Affairs, Pabitra Margherita, reaffirmed India’s strong support for ASEAN Unity and Centrality at the ASEAN-India Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Kuala Lumpur. He highlighted the alignment between ASEAN’s Indo-Pacific Outlook and India’s Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative as beneficial for regional growth. Margherita also emphasized the thriving India-ASEAN partnership driven by strong people-to-people ties and practical cooperation.
